Barkev Sanders was born Barkev Sandragortzian in Tagh, Shatach, Turkey to an Armenian family on July 2, 1903. His father was a teacher and a Protestant minister. Shortly after his birth, Sanders was taken to the city of Van, where he spent most of his childhood. In 1915, during the Turkish persecution of Armenians, Sanders and his family fled Turkey and relocated to Alkamar, Russian Armenia, where, also in 1915, both of his parents and two of his brothers died.
